Major Program: Master Gardener
Plan of Work: Strengthening Extension and Community Leaders
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Floyd County Extension Master Gardeners continues outstanding programs and community service. At this point in the year, thirteen master gardeners have completed 407 volunteer hours and reached 2,817 individuals through their efforts. Several are doing community service projects by working with raised bed gardening at nursing home facilities, senior housing sites, and low income housing centers. Most have manned our educational booth at the local farmers market, providing nutritional and educational resources to attendees. A couple have developed plant and tree identification tools which have been used to educate youth groups at a few local parks. The most recent activities are the development and installation of three certified Monarch Waystations in the county to benefit the pollinators. Extension has collaborated with the city of Prestonsburg, Jenny Wiley State Park and Adams Middle School to develop the monarch habitats at each site. Their efforts are already being recognized by the community and its leaders. The mayor of Prestonsburg stated that the Extension Master Gardeners are truly leaders in the community and we could use more like them. As a result, the Prestonsburg Landscape Department has provided soil and mulch for other master gardeners’ projects.
