Increasing Consumption of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

              Larue County Kentucky has an obesity rate of 33% with 74% considered overweight., 59% of

families are low income.

              LaRue County Farmers Market  was held weekly for eight weeks. LaRue County Cooperative Extension Service  participated in a Senior Farmers Market Voucher program. 80 sets of Vouchers  worth 28.00 each were distributed to low  income  seniors over 60 in LaRue County. With a goal of increasing consumption of in season locally grown produce.

               LaRue County Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Assistant and Ag and Natural Resources Agent demonstrated cooking fresh produce and distributed Plate it Up recipes to participants each week.

                Participants utilization rate of  vouchers was 94.8% resulting in an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and overall heathier eating habits. 

 One participant stated that she “looked forward to Farmers Market each week so she would have new ideas of how to prepare  her weekly purchases”.
