Getting Healthy Over the Summer

Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In an effort to get kids moving and eating healthy this summer North Middletown Elementary School hosted a summer camp for students.   Over the course of the 4 weeks campers learned healthy recipes and used them to prepare their own snacks, Professor Popcorn curriculum was used for this group.   Healthy foods such as Fruit Smoothies, trail mix, and fruit salad were prepared.  Exercise was a big part of the day.  The kids also participated in My Plate relay games, in which they had to pick a food card, run to the food group bags, and identify where the food belonged and then run back to their team.  Each of the participants received reinforcement items that will help them continue to prepare their own foods at home as well as some items to get them moving more.  As part of their day they learned about MY Plate and how what you eat affects your entire body.

There were 34 participants, ranging from kindergarten through 2nd grade.  Based on the Pre and Post
Test evaluations the campers filled out, 76% improved their ability to recognize dairy foods, 53% increased their vegetables knowledge and 76% are able to better recognize when they need to wash their hands before eating.  One participant stated “I didn’t know that I liked vegetables!”  One teacher commented “the students have been eating more of their fruits and vegetables at lunch instead of tossing it, untouched, into the trash.”
