Youth obesity is a growing problem in Kentucky. According the the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's 2018 "The State of Obesity" report, the rate of obesity for the Kentucky youth, ages 10 to 17 is 19.3%. Kentucky is ranked third out of 51 states in the category of childhood obesity. Using the updated 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics Clinical Practice Guidelines, a CDC study showed that 4% of youth between ages 12 and 19 have hypertension, while 10% have elevated blood pressure. Harrison County has a large variety of fast food options. Education the youth about ways to eat healthier and make smarter food choices became the primary goal.

In a collaborative effort, the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library and University of Kentucky Harrison County Extension Service's Nutrition Education Program Supplemental Nutrition Education Program assistant teamed up to educate the youth. Nine participants, grades sixth through ninth, learned how to eat healthier, increase physical activity, and practice food safety in fun ways. Using the education series Teen Cuisine, the series was completed after seven hours over a four day period. at the completion of the series, 78% of the youth were practicing two or more food selection behaviors. They were trying new foods in class and at home. A parent said her daughter had cooked a healthy dinner at home for the family. Six out of nine youth had also gained knowledge and skills to prepare simple, nutritious, and affordable foods.

The series was enjoyed by all the participants. One young man stated he would like to become a chef, after completing the series. He wants to continue to improve his skills and practice food safety while preparing nutritious meals.
