Road Map for Healthy Eating

Author: Juanita Herron

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Marion County Expanded Food and Nutrition program assistant partnered with the local public housing. They were in need of acquiring knowledge about being healthy for themselves and their families.

I had a seven week series of Healthy Choices Curriculum. I had the classes after school was out in the afternoon. So that more individuals could attend.

I started out with the lesson on My Plate. I told them to think of using the My Plate like a road map. Throughout the lessons, the participants were taught to use the My Plate to be able to choose healthy foods for ourselves and our families.

I talked also about how important breakfast is for them and their families. We talked about if you are eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and how you always need to use the guidelines of My Plate. After the seven week class, the families were able to verbalize changes in their diet. They were eating at least something for breakfast besides doughnuts and pop tarts. They verbalized how they were able to have a more productive morning by eating a healthy breakfast each day. It was a rewarding program for all participants.
