Author: Valerie Robinette

Planning Unit: Pike County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Partnering with WestCare Rehabilitation for the seventh year is a natural fit for Pike County Cooperative Extension Service and The Expanded Food Nutrition Educational Program.
The Healthy Choices For Everybody Curriculum was taught. Clients were taught the five food groups, how to read recipes, measure, proper food portions, how to make a menu, compare prices at the grocery store, and food safety .

Eleven Clients ages 18-65 entered the program with 100 % graduating. Sixty-Two percent showed improvement diet quality, 76% showed improvement in physical activity, 82 % showed improvement in food safety, and 63% improved in Food Resource Management.

When asked to share about their experience, clients wrote " I found out it's not good to thaw meat out by laying it on the counter. It is super important to make sure it is done to proper recommended temperature. I have not only learned how to eat healthier with less money, but I have also learned how to properly prepare and store food in order to prevent food borne illness from spreading."
