CIS summer camp with KSU

Children are inquisitive and are eager to learn new information. Teaching children about nutrition is important because it will encourage them to choose healthy foods. In Fayette County, through the federally funded Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), the EFNEP program has been a factor in helping families to learn about nutrition education, meal planning, and food safety techniques to educate and change food pattern behaviors to low-income families. CIS (Community Inspired Solutions) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Their mission is to help decrease violence in Lexington, KY. The CIS summer camp provides different resources and community partners to provide educational learning opportunities with children.

Kentucky State University Fayette County EFNEP program has helped encourage children ages K-5th graders how to make half of their plate fruits and vegetables, Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) dairy, limit soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages, eat whole grains and reduce refined grains, and choose low-fat proteins. The students at the CIS summer camp were taught how to improve their health and wellbeing by using the MyPlate curriculum. The goal was to provide children with skills to make healthy choices.

The summer camp series was throughout June 2019-July 2019. Children were encouraged to eat and engage in healthy eating habits. Through the 24-hour pre and post food recall, the EFNEP assistant was able to measure the results of the participants. There were 22 students who participated in the series and six participants were able to graduate the program. The children were able to eat healthily and learn different physical activity practices.
