Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to America’s Health Rankings by United Health Foundation, Kentucky ranked forty nine in 2017 for senior health. In order to improve the health of Louisville seniors, the Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum was implemented at Yorktown Senior House by a SNAP-Ed assistant with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Nutrition Education Program. Lessons included topics such as meal planning, eating better on a budget, food safety, and MyPlate. After completion of the program, 64% of participants reported that they check their cupboard more often before shopping and 64% also reported they make a list before shopping more often. Seniors are known to sometimes skip meals or rely heavily on frozen meals, so this improvement shows an increase in meal planning motivations in the group of seniors. Meal planning is an important component of healthy eating and living.
