Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
This year, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Office Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program partnered with the McDowell Senior Citizens Center. The Nutrition Education Program adult curriculum was used. Out of all the topics that were discussed, one particular lesson stood out to the attending adults. This lesson was “Eating Better on a Budget for Every Body: Save More at the Grocery Store”. This focuses on budgeting topics such as cooking dinner at home instead of going out, comparing food prices, planning meals before shopping, looking in the refrigerator and in the cupboard before shopping, and using a grocery list.
After implementing this lesson, one hundred percent of the participants showed improvement in regards to food resource management. They learned helpful tips and tricks that they could do to improve their overall food security, all while on a budget. One adult said “You know, there are things that you touched on that are definitely common sense when you say them, but I had just never really thought to do before... Like buying my meats in bulk, separating them myself, and then freezing them. I had just never really thought to do it like that. All this time I could have been saving so much more on my groceries. ”
