Outcome: Initial Outcome
Physical activity is a problem not only in our schools but at home also. The obesity rate is 34% in Kentucky. Regular physical activity is vital to a healthy lifestyle. It can improve quality of life & health outcomes.
The Carter County Nutrition Education Program Assistant (NEP) went to West Carter Middle School’s Summer Camp and met with 48 incoming 6th graders and taught a nutrition lesson, Get Up and Move, and played an exercise game using dice. One dice had numbers, the other dice had exercises, and the students would split up into teams and compete against each other in rolling the dice and doing the exercises.
By doing this game, 40 of the students said they could see that exercising could be fun, it did not always have to be boring. To make it more fun for them, you could turn on some music for them, you might even get them to move a little faster. For some of the students, this was a big step. This game would be a wonderful investment for the school’s gym teachers to invest in.
