Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Plan of Work: Adapting to Changing Agricultural Markets

Outcome: Initial Outcome

A couple of entrepreneurs in Fleming County decided they were interested in growing vegetables hydroponically in an old tobacco barn.  They initially seeked information on how they could be successful as well as become GAP certified.  The Vegetable Production Guide for Commercial Growers book was supplied to the two and a specialist farm visit was also planned.

The two entrepreneurs  and their wives attended the Produce Best Practice Training at the Fleming County Extension office in September 2017 to receive their certificate from Kentucky Department of Agriculture.  They received their PBPT Diploma by the schedule farm visit on September 25th.

At the farm visit on September 25, 2017, UK Specialist, Dr. Wright, viewed the hydroponic setup and assisted in answering questions about production decisions and offered suggestions of areas to improve upon.  Dr. Wright also assisted in helping the entrepreneurs decide other hydroponic vegetable opportunities and marketing techniques.

The growers have joined the farmers market and have expanded from tomatoes to lettuce.
