4-H Camp Sponsorships

Author: Valerie Stewart

Planning Unit: Powell County CES

Major Program: Summer Residential Camps

Plan of Work: Addressing Family Life Needs

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With nearly 25% of Powell County's total population in poverty according to the 2018 U.S. Census, the cost of youth events and activities is a huge consideration to participation especially 4-H camp.  The Powell County 4-H Council decided to expand efforts to raise additional 4-H Camp Sponsorships for 2019 through personal asks, fundraising efforts, grants, etc.  Members made personal contacts to new and previous 4-H camp sponsors; wrote camp sponsorships into grants utilitzed by the Powell County 4-H Program and conducted a variety of fundraisers to help increase the funds available for camp sponsorships.  The 4-H Council also reduced the camp costs by $100 to see if that would help increase participation.  As a result, the Powell County 4-H Council was able to secure more than $11,000 for 4-H Camp Sponsorships for 2019 as well as increase the total camp numbers to nearly 70.  This was an increase in participation of over 70% and with no family paying more than $150 - many much less.  90% of 2019 4-H campers stated they will be returning for 2020 and with continued sponsorships we hope to only grow our 4-H camp base even more in future years.
