Author: Valerie Stewart
Planning Unit: Powell County CES
Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping
Plan of Work: Producing & Marketing Agricultural Products
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Powell County Extension Staff was asked by the Powell County Beekeepers Group about applying for County Ag Development funds to help provide funds to increase the number of bee hives locally. Extension staff contacted the State Office on Ag Policy and worked closely with the Powell County Beekeepers group to prepare an application for grant funds to help support the increase in new bee hives and the expansion of existing bee hives in Powell County. The grant application was approved helping to fund the addition of more than 10 new bee hives to the local environment. Increased pollinators would subsequently increase pollination in nearby crops, gardens, orchards, etc. in future years. Local Beekeepers were able to increase the number of active hives as well as improve hive health for better sustainability over time.
