According to the 2018 Kentucky Health Issues Poll- created and operated by the Foundation for A Healthy Kentucky - many survey participants stated there was access to healthy fruits and vegetables but the cost is a barrier to those foods. Also, a high percentage of people taking the survey was concerned with high obesity rates and cancer in the state. Knowing statistically that Bath County has 37 percent of adults are considered obese, this deserved to be addressed. The Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent teamed up with the health department and the family resource center coordinators to host a Cooking For 2 program. Participants learned how to cook their own meals with a partner, learning how to successfully choose foods with lower costs and higher nutrient-dense foods, discovering fun and healthy recipes through the Plate It Up Kentucky Proud website, and how to reduce serving sizes to fit the needs of the participants. It was a success for each pair of people to be able to create nutritious, healthy meals from scratch. All participants increased their fruit and vegetable consumption, and half of participants said they regularly search the KY Proud website first for in-season produce and for recipes.
