Plan of Work: Improving Profitability and Sustainability of Livestock and Crop Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

NRCS and Extension have made a leap to start working together on what they call demo farms around the state for a program call Profitable Pastures. Doug Corbett, a Marion Co. resident, volunteered to be a part of this program. His farm is limited in some resources and he is wanting to get an idea of changes to make to get his farm to be more profitable. Some of the limitation that were noticed when first visiting the farm are water, shade, and rotational grazing. With the help of other colleagues from Larue Co and Anderson Co. as well as Specialist Greg Halich and NRSC representative Matt Norfleet and Paul Veetch some recommendations were made to Mr. Corbett for his consideration. To address the water issues on his farm it was suggested that he fence the cattle out of the creek first and foremost. To help the cattle have better access to clean water that was previously limited to one waterer close to the barn the suggestion was made to place waterers every 800 feet along a path that made since for rotational grazing later down the road. The farm was also laid out in a way the rotational grazing can be a possibility with minimal effort by adding semi-permanent fence now and splitting it into smaller pastures when needed. An additional resource concern that was addressed was the need for some sort of heavy use area for feeding cattle in the winter. After observing and discussing the current locations of his barns, water, and hay storage an ideal location was determine and suggestions were made on what type structure should be considered for maximum efficiency.  All in all problems that Mr. Corbett was facing were made into a plan that would work excellent for his farm using both NRSC and Extension suggestions and ideas.
