Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming
Plan of Work: Building Life Skills in Youth
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Gardening benefits youth through the application of knowledge gained in math and science according to Dun Munn from the Michigan State University Extension. In addition, gardening provides moderate exercise. The Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with Girls Inc. to teach gardening skills that can be used throughout life to the girls. The girls in this program have limited access to gardening locations. In the area at the Girls Inc. building where gardening activities are taking place, the landscaping in front of a low retention wall was removed. To begin installing new plants in this location, 21 girls leaned about spring flowering bulbs and how to plant them from the Horticulture Agent. The elementary school girls then showed what they learned by planting tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths for the first time. They planted over 25 bulbs. During the planting process, the girls discovered earth worms, grubs, and beneficial insects while they were digging. This was the first time that some of the girls encountered these creatures.
