4-H Camp is a common topic in the 4-H world and in many communities. Recruitment and the rising cost is a difficult challenge Clay County has faced for several years. According the U.S. Census Bureau, 41.7 percent of the population is living below the federal poverty level in Clay County. Unfortunately, $225 for 4-H Camp is a luxury that almost all 4-Hers cannot afford.

4-H Camp provides a safe learning environment where many positive learning opportunities and experiences take place. 4-Hers engage in new activities and educational classes, while gaining responsibility, building self-confidence, and stepping out of their comfort zone. We believe every child who has an interest in attending 4-H Camp should be eligible to attend as much as kids with an adequate amount of financial support. For these reasons, the 4-H Agent and local 4-H Teen Club helped fundraise and present information about the importance of 4-H Camp to local civic groups and organizations.

After working diligently, the Clay County 4-H Council Fund had the privilege of receiving $10,150 to help sponsor 52 youth for 4-H Camp. We were able to advertise the camp cost at $50, which tremendously helped with recruitment. The local 4-H Teen Club members traveled to elementary schools and discussed past camp experiences and explained the significance of attending.

Following camp, campers expressed their appreciation. Some stated, “I’m so glad I got to attend, I wouldn’t have been able to attend without the help of our community.” Other expressed trying new things and meeting new friends that will last a lifetime.
