Planning Unit: Anderson County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With a community effort to get youth physical active, a team made up of Anderson County 4-H Youth Development Agent, Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, Anderson County Schools, and local business planned/organized the Longest Day of Play event. The event was designed to bring youth outdoors and to participate in over 40 outdoor play activities in which they would be physical active. Each station offered prizes for participating.
The Longest Day of the play was scheduled to coincide with the longest day of sunlight hours at the height of the summer solstice. Benefits of the event fresh air, exercise, experience playing with others, sense of belonging to the community. Studies show children who spend more time outdoors and less time watching TV have better microvascular structure. Research also shows that youth with ADHD function better in the outdoor rather than a built environment.
This was the 3rd year for the program. We had over 625 kids particpated. Over $2,500 worth of door prizes donated and handed out, door prizes ranged from bicycles to basketballs. The event has complete community support and plans are in motion to plan the Longest Day of Play for 2020.
