Breckinridge County health facts reflect 33% adults are obese, 31% report a lack of physical activity, and 12.6% adults have diabetes. In addition local healthcare and school professionals report an increase in youth diabetes in the county. In a continued effort to increase awareness and improve individual wellness, the Breckinridge County Extension Service Family and Consumer Science program is collaborating with the local health department and hospital to provide educational learning and support for families living with diabetes. The bi-monthly support group has been meeting for three years and has become an established resource for families.  The supporting agencies provide learning sessions relating to A1C, diabetic medications, foot care, eye care, nutrition, physical activity and food preparation. The curriculum utilized includes Taking Ownership of Your Diabetes and American Diabetes Association resources. The Plate It Up Ky Proud! Recipe series is presented through food demonstrations and encourages healthy eating and the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables. Average attendance has grown to 15 - 20 participants. Program evaluations reports an increased understanding of carbohydrates counting and one’s AIC number. A recent member spotlight in the local newspaper credits the support group as an essential part of her disease management plan. Through the proper medications, diet and portion control, and exercise the participants A1C has decreased from 14 to 6 and she has lost 42 lbs.  The collaborative effort is providing a support system that is creating the community environment of health and wellness that is strengthening families in Breckinridge County.
