“I bought a farm…”

“ I just bought a farm, what can I do to make money, and where can I find a grant to pay for it?”….This is the number one question I receive weekly. Unfortunately for the caller, there is never an easy answer. In fact, I answer this question with a series of questions; How many acres? What resources do you have? What are you currently doing on the farm? In five years, where do you see yourself? And finally…What do you like to do?

In essence, this is my favorite question I receive. It is filled with such optimism and hope. These returning and first generation farmers are hungry to play in the “dirt” and are looking for the simpler life. In response to this question, I partnered with my fellow ANR and Hort agents in Northern Kentucky to feature specialists and successful growers who are working with diversified small scale crops, and so was born the Northern Kentucky Specialty Crop Grower’s Conference.

The one day conference, was packed with growers looking to expand, diversify, or enter markets to grow and promote agriculture. With over 120 in attendance from over 7 counties, the day was a success.

Pendleton County had a great showing from producers who are working with farmers markets, aquaculture, maple syrup production, poultry, produce, high tunnels, greenhouses, hydroponics, and so much more. Our small county is filled with an abundance of farmers who are taking strides to meet consumer demand and cut back on the miles that our food travels.

If you are interested in more growing opportunities or looking to join the local Pendleton County Farmers’ Market, don’t delay in reaching out to Lindie to set up a time to talk about the possibilities and opportunities available to expand your farm operation.
