The Caldwell County 4-H Council strives to make youth programs and events affordable to all youth of the county. The Fundraising Committee is continually trying to come up with creative ways to supplement the cost for youth to participate in 4-H activities, including 4-H Camp. In the spring of 2018 the committee began to design a Farm Appreciation Calendar with the proceeds going to help offset the overall cost of 4-H Camp per camper. Farmers in the county sponsored a page and made the decision of what picture they wanted to use. They also gave a brief description of their farming operation and any past or present ties they have to 4-H. This was educational for the community because it opened their eyes to the importance of agriculture in our rural county. The calendar was also a way to highlight our 4-H members and all the opportunities available to them in our county 4-H program.
Total net from the calendar sales was $2,765.50. In 2019 the base cost per camper to attend 4-H Camp was $225. This didn’t include the cost of the t-shirt, transportation, etc. which was an additional $20 making the total cost $245. The cost of camp is already a deterrent for many families and adding extra cost would keep even more from being able to attend. The funds generated from calendar sales were used to cut the overall cost of camp per camper by $35 making the final cost per camper $210. This made a rate increase of only $5 from the previous year. The Fundraising Committees efforts to keep the overall cost down was a success and helped to increase the county camp numbers by 20 from 2018.
