Outcome: Initial Outcome
Following the wide spread injury to soybean and other crops due to off-site movement the EPA mandated that all applicators be trained prior to making dicamba applications in 2017. Following the success of 2017 trainings in increasing the awareness of applicators when applying dicamba, the EPA held the mandate to be continued annually. The extension weed science team worked with ANR Agents and herbicide registrants to schedule 11 trainings across the state from January through March of 2018. A total of approximately 750 applicators and farmers attended trainings conducted by the University of Kentucky. The trainings were designed to reinforce the responsibility applicators and farmers take on when applying dicamba to dicamba-resistant soybean and the ramifications of allowing the product to move off-site. The trainings outlined all potential causes of off-site movement and methods to mitigate off-site movement.
Results of these trainings have led to a higher regard of stewardship of dicamba products during their application as increased awareness of applicators to surrounding sensitive crops.
