Author: Kelly Smith

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Educating, & empowering individuals & families to make responsible choices & develop lifeskills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Several years ago, community members within the Louisville Area began the discussion of the need for education within areas of Agriculture.  With the access to a historical farm site and number of educators willing to get involved, the Family, Farm and Forage Day event was created.   Several members from the community, Metro Council of Louisville and the Extension office were represented to plan the event.   This event included; Demonstrations and Speakers on-forage crops, high tunnels, raising chickens, growing fruit trees, keeping bees, keeping goats, beneficial garden insects, Kentucky State University Nutrition Trailer, University of Kentucky NEP program, FFA participants with a farm animal petting zoo, horse drawn wagon rides, barrel train rides, tours of the historical Farnsley-Moremen house, 4-H Fair & American Dairy Goat Association sanctioned Dairy Goat Show.

It was estimated that 1000 people attended this event, held on June 15.  The 4-H fair that took place, included exhibiting projects that youth from Jefferson County entered, also the 4-H staff provided educational exhibits and hands on learning.  This was a great success for the 4-H Program.  This not only touched lives of youth that made the projects, but attendees of the Family Farm & Forage Day viewing these projects and activities.   This is a culminating event for many 4-H clubs and youth that have been learning and working on projects for the year.   Another success for the 4-H program was the sanctioned Dairy Goat show.  This was the third time holding the event, however this year the committee sanctioned the event drawing a larger amount of goats and exhibitors.   Close to 100 goats were shown and exhibitors traveled from several counties.  Many enjoyed the day, and look forward to returning.

This is a great community event providing education and entertainment.
