Progressive Ag Safety Day

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Promoting Healthy Homes and Communities (general)

Plan of Work: Youth Development Programming

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Progressive Ag Safety is a wonderful grant program that we have received for the past couple of years that truly benefits the youth of our county. This year we had a record number of students participate, 384-4th graders in the district participated. There were numerous stations set up that included-water safety, chemical/drug safety, grain bin safety, animal safety, food safety, atv and tractor safety to list a few. The Marion county extension office collaborated with several community businesses such as the soil conservation, FFA, Bluegrass and Community Technical College, local farmers, Farm Bureau, and US Marine Corps of Green River Lake and KU/RECC just to name a few. Our EFNEP assistant discussed in depth to the children the importance of washing their hands and washing produce before consumption to prevent any illnesses. We also had tractors and an atv along with video of what they look like when the flip over. The children all came away with goody bags and a hand full of knowledge to hopefully prevent any future accidents. The safety of our youth depends on the knowledge and training that we give them to provide a safer community.
