The Johnson County Adult 4-H Council identified the need to provide financial fundraising opportunities for the Johnson County 4-H Youth Development Program as part of the 2017-2018 Plan of Work. One opportunity to do so first presented itself 55 years ago in the form of the Johnson County Kentucky Apple Festival. Originally started as a way to market the local apple orchard's crop. With local orchards no longer in existence, it has now evolved into a festival that offers over 40 civic/church groups the opportunity to raise funds to operate their organizations. This year the Johnson County Adult 4-H Council processed 130 bushels of apples in the creation of their Caramel Apple Fundraiser, which is a long way from the 80 bushels documented in 2002. This will result in an operating budget exceeding $10,000 for the programming year. Extension personnel, Adult Council leaders, teen club members, parents, community volunteers, local businesses and the Apple Festival Board worked together and engaged as a community to help others and provide a wonderful tourist attraction to people both inside and outside our community. Budgeting and distribution of these funds will begin in November 2017. Due to the participation of 4-H's 43 volunteers, the 4-H program has enough funding to offer valuable, educational and life changing opportunities to our clientele in the coming year.
