Filling the Gap with the Arts

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent has, for years, formed a coalition with our local artists. Butler County has a rich heritage of talented and creative people. Since art classes have been reduced in the school system, the gap is being addressed by offering classes that promote the arts in our community. Classes that promote the Arts have been held at various locations with the following medias being taught: Painting, Quilting, Sculpting, Caning, Writing, Photography, Carving and Music. As a result of the growing interest, local individuals came together and formed a local Arts Guild in Morgantown. The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, also a member, worked with the guild to create a large mural located in the new office of The Butler County Extension Service.  Once completed (2-3 more years) it will be the largest indoor mural in the western half of the state.  The mural depicts many scenes from life and history in Butler County, but the most amazing part is the plethora of diverse participants.  To prove this, we invited first graders, 4-Hers, as well as senior adults to participate in creating this fantastic historical mural.   This piece of art will not only represent our community and history, but the creation is an event from our history. This, alone, allowed individuals to find their niche in the arts and grow personally.
