The purpose of this event is to acquaint/familiarize Kentucky youth with forestry/natural resources industries and potential career opportunities. This one day event encompasses nine individual and one team competition in forestry and wood technology for youth in the junior and senior age groups. The competitive events are: Compass and Pacing, Forestry Equipment Identification, Tree Identification, Tree Measurement, Wood Identification, Woodworking Tool Identification, Soil Judging, Invasive Species, Individual Woodworking Project and Team Woodworking project.
The 2018 event took place on October 02, 2018 at the UK Wood Utilization Center, Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability, Quicksand, KY. This year we had a total of 140 student competitors, (59 girls and 81 boys), 9 Advisers, and 50 workers for a total of 195. Schools and clubs attending were: Breathitt County TSA, Buckhorn High School FFA, Carter County 4-H, Jackson Independent, Knott County Central High School FFA, Lee County High School FFA, and Riverside Christian School. Fifty support personnel participated in the event which included cooperative extension agents, agriculture teachers, UK personnel, Kentucky Division of Forestry personnel, forest industry leaders, and other interested individuals. Participating youth demonstrated through their preparation in the individual events, they had acquired forestry and wood technology skills, natural resource awareness, as well as awareness of career opportunities as evidenced by their performance at the Win With Wood program. Awards were presented to all participants. The Senior Overall Winners who received a medallions were: Skylar Campbell (first place winner), Lee County FFA, Sara Estes (second place winner), Lee County FFA, and Taylor Roberts, (third place winner), Lee Co. FFA. Skylar Campbell, the overall winner received the $500 to attend the UK College of Agriculture. This scholarship has been endowed by the Kentucky Forest Industries Association and the University of Kentucky. The Junior Overall Winners who received medallions: Ethan Pope (first place winner), Carter Co. 4-H, Emma Riggs (second place winner), Carter County 4-H, and Alyssa Holbrook (third place winners) Carter County 4-H. This event was a positive experience for everyone and we look forward to the 2018 WWW.
My specific role in the program included; coordinator/manager, WWW development committee member, created and updated training materials as needed for several of the events, wood id judge, and wrote program for adding and totaling scores, and score keeping. In addition, I am one of the four founding committee members for the original development of the program.
