Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Improving Health and Wellness in Cumberland County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the Center of Disease Control, 32.2% of adults in Cumberland County reported no leisure time exercise in the past month. Furthermore, only 28% of Cumberland County residents have adequate access to locations for physical activity. There is one fitness center in the county.

The Cumberland County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Lake Cumberland District Health Department and Centerpoint Church partnered to begin a Walking Program in January. This was offered at the Cumberland County Extension office and was coordinated by an adult volunteer from Centerpoint Church. Lake Cumberland District Health Department donated walking DVD's and stretch bands to those participating in the program. The program was offered four days per week through the month of March.

Eighteen individuals participated in the walking program. The program was so successful that it has continued throughout the month of June. The group has collectively logged 2,495 miles walked. One participant shared, "It feels good to exercise early in the day. It makes me feel good for the rest of my day." Another shared, "I have lost ten pounds since I have been coming to the walking program."
