Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent and the Powell County Health Department conducted a four-week diabetes educational series in the Fall of 2018 and Spring of 2019. This series aimed to teach diabetics and their family members how to better understand and manage their diabetes. Weekly lesson topics included: Understanding Diabetes, The ABCs (A1C, Blood Glucose, and Cholesterol) of Diabetes, Nutrition for Diabetes, and Getting Routine Care. Participants were also able to sample and take home diabetic friendly recipes.

A four month follow up from the Fall session indicated that out of 14 participants (tracked in the last 12 months) had a 7.89% average decrease in Hemoglobin A1C after 3 month. Also, 85% of participants completing the program had a dilated eye exam. Many participants were able to reduce or come off of their medications for diabetes management and 100% reported that they do not miss their diabetes medications.
