Livestock Program

Major Program: Agriculture 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Community and Economic Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In 2018 Coventry Oak Elementary participated in a 4-H lesson focused on agriculture, specifically livestock. During this program leaders from the Fayette County 4-H Livestock Club brought sheep and goat to the school to educate the students and also to help encourage participation in the 4-H Club. This is a program that is offered to several schools throughout Fayette County and all those that participate thoroughly enjoy. Students in the classrooms are able to have the opportunity to be hands-on with animals that they likely would not have otherwise been able to interact with. The goal is to provide these students with new experiences and open up the possibility for them to become a member of the 4-H Livestock Club and learn even more about these animals. With Coventry Oak in 2018, one student in particular was very interested and asked a lot of questions. She soon became a member of the Fayette County 4-H Club and quickly decided that she wanted to show sheep. She learned a lot in her first year and has since continued showing sheep and her membership in 4-H. She has also recruited several friends to interest meetings and because of her the club has gained 3 new members consisting of her family and friends.

This is a great example of how 4-H can make an impact with what can sometimes seem like another school club meeting. Each time we are able to expose youth to new experiences and opportunities, we are opening a whole new world of possibilities to them, and sometimes it becomes their passion.
