Based on feedback from Kentucky 4-H professionals and Kentucky 4-H youth there was a need for educational focus that promotes productive and successful teens. The purpose of the Kentucky 4-H Promoting Productive Teens curriculum is to aide in the administration of high-quality programs that empower teens to become active and productive citizens in their community, which could lead to success after high school. The Kentucky 4-H Program partnered with the Gifted and Talented Program at McCreary County High School to conduct a six-hour workshop focused on skills that teens can translate from high school to college or career.
The four overarching themes for the workshop were: organizational skills, communication skills, leadership skills, and professional skills. As a result of participating in the Kentucky 4-H Promoting Productive Teens workshop 93% of youth learned how their personal values impact the commitments they make, 47% realized how their values impact how they prioritize their time, 79% understand the value of non-verbal communication skills, 93% realized the importance of communication when working in a team environment, 86% recognize that their perception of the world impacts the way they lead others, 65% internalized what type of leader they want to be, 86% organized their skills into a career category, and 65% related their skills to careers of interest.
