~~Agriculture is a dangerous industry, with Kentucky farmers getting injured by buried utilities and in ATV and tractor accidents. Over the last year, more than 700 kids have learned about these farm safety issues from the Lewis County ANR agent.  ATV lessons have covered safety equipment, having only one rider at a time, and how to properly drive and handle an ATV. For tractor safety students learned the importance of a seat belt and a roll over protection structure, what a SMV or Slow Moving Vehicle sign means, power take off safety, how to check hydraulics for leaks, proper handling of a tractor, and how to use hand signals to communicate to other drivers. Youth also learned the importance of knowing where buried utility lines are and to call 811 before digging. Classes were taught at the Lewis County Health and Safety Day for third and fourth graders at Central Elementary, Lewis County Youth Field Day for all 5th graders in the county, Greenup County Great Ag Adventure Day for 325 fourth graders, and Southern States (local farm supply store) for their kids safety day.  All of these programs are annual events that allow students to learn more about agriculture safety.
