The War Memorial Committee established a beautiful memorial site in Greenup County due to the large number of Veterans who live in the area. The site serves as a reminder to the community the importance and appreciation of veterans.
The committee became older and physically unable to maintain the site and needed help. A collaboration began between the War Memorial Committee and the Greenup County Master Gardeners. The Greenup County Master Gardeners developed a landscape plan using their knowledge from the Master Gardener classes and curriculum. They also recruited a local bricklayer who was a veteran to build a new flowerbed. The group received donations and raised money to purchase new plants and mulch. One Master Gardener secured a donation of a gazebo to be put on site.
The Master Gardeners most recently have recruited the help of a local 4-H community club to help maintain the War Memorial. This year, forty 4-Hers and their parents donated their time weeding, staining woodwork and planting flowers at the War Memorial.
The War Memorial beautification project allowed the Master Gardeners to use their skills and also helped 4-Hers learn the importance of pride and citizenship. In 2019 local volunteers have donated $3,051 to the project according to the independent sector volunteer rate.
