Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
1 in 5 adults in America experience a mental illness and 90% of those who die by suicide have an underlying mental illness. Mental illness does not discriminate by race, culture, gender or financial status. These numbers are terrifying however as a society it is uncomfortable to acknowledge or discuss this issue.
The Bluegrass Area Extension Homemakers selected Mental Health Awareness as a monthly lesson for the 2019-19 year. Congratulations to this group for requesting information on such a staggering crisis.
This lesson was taught to 119 Extension Homemaker Leaders in the Area. The following data was collected from the end of lesson evaluations:
- 92% felt that their knowledge of mental health issues was improved
- 72% said that as a result of this lesson they would be more likely to address the stigma attached to Mental Health issues a
- 81% indicated that as a result of attending this session they have a higher feeling of need for more awareness education
- 67% of the 119 felt comfortable with their ability to lead in the Mental Health Awareness of the county
The most frequent additional comment was “I had no idea!”
At the completion of one presentation, a participant approached and said “This is something that more than just Homemakers need to hear. Would you be willing to come share with my Women’s group?” And of course the answer was yes. One program at a time, Kentucky Extension Homemakers are making a difference!
