Youth and Adults work together to clean the County

Planning Unit: Livingston County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Grain marketing, environmental sustainability, and natural resources.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Recycling saves and helps everyone in Livingston County.  Recycling one ton of newspaper saves 17 trees. If each Kentucky house-hold recycled one average Sunday newspaper, that would save over 16,000 trees in a single day.  Recycling one pound of glass saves enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for four hours.  Kentuckians use 37,000 beverage bottles each hour. If each Kentucky household recycled just one plastic bottle each week, in one year that would represent $303,298.00 in recycled material and a landfill tipping fee savings of $84,924.00 for a total value of $388,220.00 a year.  4-H youth and adult volunteers committed to conducted a five mile roadside cleanup along highway 60 in Ledbetter, KY.  Having done this community service project in the past, the youth and volunteer did not anticipate the quantity of trash they would collect. This past year, the group collected more than triple the amount of trash than previous years combined. It took the group twice as long to complete the five mile commitment.  The youth spent some time contemplating the reason for this disparity. It was not until the youth researched the results from the QuickFacts on the U.S. Census website and came to realize that Ledbetter actually has over 1,300 more people residing in it than Smithland and over 800 more than Salem.  The youth were able to understand the correlation of population density and trash quantity.  This project gave the participants a better understanding and conviction to recycle and repurpose their garbage.
