Outcome: Initial Outcome
Computer programming is expected to be the fastest growing occupation in the next 10 years. With only 400,000 graduates in computer science, it is expected to leave a deficit of one million coders. Additionally, on a National level, only 1 in 10 schools teach computer science. Finally, 60% of math and science jobs are computing jobs that need real exposure and practice in programming. The Livingston County 4-H has been implementing 4-H Coding curriculum since 2017 with the introduction of 4-H TechWizards, a granted program from the National 4-H Council. The program allowed coding lessons in fun and interactive utilizing the National 4-H Code Your World National Science Day Experiment coupled with using the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics package to engage in exciting challenges with the RCX Challenge and the Kentucky 4-H Robotics Challenge. The county youth are learning to negotiate the challenges through coding are in actuality engage language learning centers in the brain and learning to problems solve with analytical thinking. Youth are excited to solve challenges and are able to utilize the coding tools readily with great aptitude. Finally, through coding curriculum, youth go from simply interacting with technology to creating technology and expressing themselves in exciting, new ways.
