Jefferson County Super Star Chef Program

Author: Lawrence Caudle

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Family and Consumer Sciences 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Accessing healthy foods & improving local food systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Cooking can be a daunting task, especially for youth who have little to no experience in the kitchen. Learning the different cooking utensils, safe cooking temperatures, safe storage duration, and reading a nutrition label can be overwhelming to a child, but the Super Star Chef Program takes the angst out of the cooking process. The Super Star Chef Program is a 3 day program that teaches youth ages 9-12 the importance of nutrition, but also the safety skills that go along with being in the kitchen. The program also allows youth to experience food in ways that they may not have experienced in the past, utilizing fresh fruits and vegetables to put a healthier spin on their favorite snacks. Jefferson County had 5 youth to participate in the program. They learned how to read a recipe and how to use measuring utensils, how to properly handle cutting utensils and how to cut and dice a number of vegetables, how to properly wash their hands, and how to read a nutrition label. The youth also learned how to utilize MyPlate to construct healthy, nutritious, balanced meals. The youth were very excited about participating in the program. Although most of the youth who participated in the Jefferson County program had experience cooking in their own personal kitchen, the Super Star Chef program did expand on their knowledge of building a healthy, nutritious meal, knowledge that they can take back to their homes to share with their friends and loved ones.
