Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Pollinators the world over are declining and none more so than the honeybee.  The number of beekeepers in Washington County is increasing with new members to the Washington County Beekeepers meeting continuing to increase.  This years Washington County Beekeeping school catered to those that were new to beekeeping or were just thinking about becoming beekeepers.  The day long even consisted of a presentation by the Horticulture Agent on developing a pollinator friendly yard and garden and plant selection for honeybees.  There were also presentations on equipment needed for beekeeping, the basics of the hive, and finally hands on hive building.  Each participant took home door prizes donated by local beekeepers and beekeeping organizations and lunch was provided by Saint Catharine Farm.  In following up with the beekeeping group five people actually decided to become beekeepers and they have a total of 7 hives after attending the bee school.  With the average honeybee colony containing 70,000 bees that is almost a half a million more honeybees in Washington County pollinating crops.
