Planning Unit: Bourbon County CES

Major Program: Commercial Horticulture

Plan of Work: Producers-Local Food Systems

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Bourbon County Extension Service added new horticulture therapy and rehabilitation garden sites during the past year.  The goal of these projects was to engage local residents in gardening and plant-based activities which would promote overall health and rehabilitation.  The Extension Service partnered with two community organizations, Accutran and Bourbon County Senior Citizens Center, in planning and carrying out these garden themed projects.  Individual participants were involved in the design, plant selection, and installation of every part of the projects.  In total, over 20 residents with special mobility and rehabilitation needs participated in these programs.  Organizers from these two community groups stated that they had seen positive responses from those participating in these activities.  It was observed that percentage of active time in garden activities had increased as well as the frequency of gardening activities.  It was stated that garden designs were successful in removing barriers that previously prevented participation in such projects.  This lead to a general overall increase in quality for participants.
