The mission of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment Cooperative Extension Service is to make a difference in the lives of Kentucky citizens through research-based education. Through partnership with Kentucky State University, Cooperative Extension takes the University to the people in their local communities, addressing issues of importance of all Kentuckians.
It has been said that Extension is the “best kept secret” in our communities, in that many communities do not know that Extension exists as well as are unaware of what Extension has to offer. In striving to be more available to our community members, Casey County Extension hosts a yearly Extension Expo in the fall inviting all community members to visit our Extension Office, speak to Extension personnel, and learn about our services.
In October, Casey County held their 2nd Annual Extension Expo with almost 300 community members attending. Attendees participated in family-friendly activities while enjoying free burgers, hot dogs, snack foods, fruit, and ice cream. The Casey County Homemakers provided demonstrations on quilting and sewing projects and displays on their programs. Over 100 youth from the community and the Jones Park Elementary 21st Century After School Program participated in activities such as slime making, finger printing, pedal carts, ATV safety, and field games led by 4-H Teen Club members. Youth were also able to enjoy a bouncy house. A local radio station was on site to provide music as well as interview community members.
The Extension Expo included sponsorships from and partnerships with the Casey County Cattlemen’s Association, Casey County Sheriff’s Department, Casey County Farm Bureau, Casey County Bank, Farmers Deposit Bank, Monticello Banking Company, Casey County Homemakers Association, and J-G Springs Dairy, LLC.
