Ag Safety Day

Author: Ricky Arnett

Planning Unit: Green County CES

Major Program: Pesticide Safety – Plant Pests

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Green County Cooperative Extension Service Council and 4-H Teen Club identified the safety of youth in agriculture and the community as a critical goal for this past year. The Cooperative Extension Service, serving as the lead organization, teamed up with the Green County Cattlemen’s Association, and solicited support from the Progressive Farmer organization. The Cooperative Extension Service recruited several other partner organizations to assist in providing educational booths on topics like tractor safety, disability awareness, ATV safety, lawnmower safety, etc. Seventy-five volunteers presented the agriculture awareness programs with 400 youth in grades three, four, and five. Each youth visited booths where a short activity was conducted with handouts, posters, and games given to the students. This activity was an all-day event on the Green County Cattlemen’s Farm. The students were bus out to the farm were all the activities took place and other community organizations sponsored a meal and snacks for the students. There was also an hour long presentation of safety with large farm equipment in the arena.

At the end of the day everything was a success. Even though we did not use evaluations to measure the success of this program 100% of the volunteers, teachers, and school officials commented on how well the program was and hoped this would be an annual event.
