Public speaking skills are ranked number one among the skill sets of professionals. Other guiding factors for developing public speaking skills include leadership development, increased self- confidence, and ability to accept feedback. (University of California, 4-H Presentation Manual, revised 2016) All of these abilities are developed and polished through the participation in the 4-H Communications program.
Oldham County 4-H involved over 507 members in the 4-H Public Speaking program with 450 presenting at the club level, 28 attending the county event, 7 attending the District Event and 4 Oldham County members qualifying for the State Event. Extension staff presented workshops focused on effective writing and presentations skills. Presentations were viewed and feedback was provided by Extension staff, teachers and family members. Staff organized club and county Communication Events.
Giving presentations develop many life skills, including the ability to speak in front of a group, and organize ideas. The 4-H Communications Program is presented thru cooperation of Oldham County 4-H, Oldham County Extension, and participating Oldham County Schools.
