Let’s Bake: Increasing food safety and baking knowledge with youth in the kitchen

Preparing youth for success when baking was the goal of the Let’s Bake program, a six-hour workshop provided by FCS, SNAP-Ed and 4-H at the Muhlenberg County Extension Office.   Thirty eager bakers attending the program and gained valuable, hand-on skills.  The youth experienced a series of life skills, and techniques including: how to properly and safely use an oven, food safety techniques such has handling raw eggs, decreasing germs, and testing finished products for doneness.  Youth participated in important kitchen skills including: measuring ingredients, reading a recipe, and kitchen tool identification, all crucial skills when preparing a recipe, meal or dish.  As a result of the Let’s Bake program, students learned about healthy choices when baking and possible healthy food item substitutes,  Safety was practiced throughout the program, most students has never used a knife.  Students were excited to see and taste what they had created.  Food safety techniques and proper use of kitchen tools are necessary to any successful chef or professional baker.  The extension office was delighted to offer this program that just may ignite a passion for such a career.
