Bovine Viral Diarrhea Persistently Infected (BVD-PI) is major cattle disease nationally with major economic impact on the feedlot and stocker segments of the industry. Due to our beef retained ownership program with Iowa, and our experience with this disease in that program; the KY Dept of Agriculture State Veterinarian Office asked the agent and a local producer to be involved in developing a BVD-PI statewide testing program. Several initial meetings have been held and a national testing lab recently located in Louisville and is working with KDA on this program. That lab, IDEXX, is now providing free BVD-PI testing for all our calves involved in the beef retained ownership program. In an effort to increase producer awareness of the problem and program, personnel from the State Vet's office presented a program to the local cattlemen's association in June 2019.
