South Central Kentucky is recognized as being a state leader in the areas of beef, dairy, poultry, forage, and tobacco.  However the equine industry is also a very integral part of the agriculture economy.   Agriculture and 4H Youth Development Extension Agents from Barren, Hart, Metcalfe, & Monroe counties joined forces to bring an educational equine field day to South Central KY.  The counties in this working group represent nearly 10,000 horses worth an estimated $18.2 million.  Agriculture Extension Agents Brandon Bell, Kevin Lyons and Chris Schalk cooperated with University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Equine Specialist, Dr. Bob Coleman to put this field day on at the Metcalfe County Fairgrounds.  Purina Equine Nutrition, Southern States Glasgow COOP, and Dr. Deann Hughes, DVM owner of Southern Equine Veterinary Services partnered with the working group to bring a hands on program to the participants.  Participants viewed actual hay samples, evaluated the sample nutritional analysis, and matched the forage to the nutritional needs of the specific equine groups.  A session was held in which participant’s looked at different feedstuffs and feed measuring devices to see that there is great variation in these feed scoops.   Dr. Bob Coleman demonstrated body condition scoring and use of a weight tape on horse.  The day was highlight by an educational demonstrations from a local farrier and local equine chiropractor.  A poll of the crowd was taken near the conclusion of the event and participant responses were recorded.  Participants overwhelming said that they would attend another event similar to this, and they will make at least one change in their operation as a result of attend the field day.  Participants went on to offer suggestion on other topic in breeding management, internal parasite management, and herd health protocol.  Plans are already in works to bring more equine programs to South Central Kentucky.
