Natural Resources Conservation Service Youth Agriculture Day

Author: Samantha Anderson

Planning Unit: Entomology

Major Program: Swine

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The American Farm Bureau Federation states that the average American is at least three generations removed from the farm. Extension Agent for Agriculture, Samantha Anderson, led an activity station at the Graves County Natural Resources Conservation Service Agriculture Day on the many impacts of the swine industry.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service Agriculture Day participants consisted of fourth grade students across Graves County. The activity station began with a discussion about the many everyday uses of swine by-products as well as an age appropriate discussion on swine terminology and agronomic practices. Following the discussion, students were encouraged to match a variety of everyday items to a large activity board based on if the item contained a product from the swine industry. Following the activity, Anderson explained to the students which matches were correct or incorrect and why.

Throughout the day, approximately 300 students participated in the activity. Students, along with educators and adult chaperones, commented extensively that they now had an expanded view on the role of the swine industry in relation to everyday household products.
