Livingston County is a rural county in western Kentucky. The rituals and traditions in the county are steeped in extracurricular sports such as softball, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and cheer leading. For youth that could not or had little success in joining a sports team or perhaps was not financially able to commit to the sometimes prohibitive costs of team sports, the summer was often proved sedentary for those youth.
Recently, the school district has welcomed National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) into all of the four schools. This program has increased the interest of archery as a team sport. In the past four year, the Livingston County 4-H Archery Team has seen a consistent but gradual increase thanks to collaborative efforts with the 4-H and NASP programs that have increased interest in archery as a team sport in the county. The youth that participate in archery "do not necessarily need to be the most athletic or fastest. Often, our girls are better marksmen with a bow than our boys!" stated the Coach. In Livingston County, archery is a growing sport that provides opportunities for youth in team sports that may have disabilities or handicaps. Additionally, the discipline that s required to practice to get better provides youth with immediate results in goal setting and results. The 4-H environments provides an encouraging family friendly opportunity for youth and their families to participate, encourage, and interact with each other. A parent stated, " I am so impressed how excited our kids are to shoot and get better at archery! It is really nice for our kids to be excited about being part of a team!"
