4-H Members Work to Overcome Challenges

The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program supported by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service reaches hundreds of youth horse enthusiasts each year through the 4-H program. The program offers opportunities to increase knowledge and apply the knowledge via district and state level competitions. This year a Warren County 4-H member competed in the District 6 4-H Horse Judging Contest. The member was very disappointed to find out she incorrectly placed nearly all of her classes and placed last out of 34 junior judging contestants. As a result of such disappointing scores, she worked hard between the district and state contest to improve her horse judging and critical thinking skills.  At the state contest, she did so well that she placed 3rd in halter and 6th overall individual.  

Another Warren County member started the 4-H program as a painfully shy individual.  She is slowly coming out of her shyness but still struggles to speak up.  She worked hard at studying horse bowl related topics and realized her goals by becoming state champion individual in senior horse bowl which requires competitors to speak up.  She will advance to the Southern Regional Competition in Perry, Georgia. Three Warren County 4-H members will advance to Southern Regional Competition at the end of July.

This reporting agent, Janet Turley, is the District 6 4-H Horse Contact Agent, coordinating four major district horse events.  Sixty-five 4-H members competed in the district horse judging and hippology contests to prepare 4-H members for the state contest.  Twenty-four of these youth competed in the state horse judging and hippology contests and won 77 top ten awards.

After surveying 46 district horse project members, all 46 members agreed or strongly agreed that they know a lot about horses and can share this knowledge with others, 38 reported that they use a skill that they learned in their horse project on a routine basis, 40 of these youth reported that they set a goal and accomplished it in their horse project.
