Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the County Health Rankings, in Washington County the rate of adult obesity is 34% and the rate of physical inactivity is 30%.  Lifestyle can greatly influence the risk for chronic disease, such as heart disease and diabetes.  To encourage healthy lifestyles, the Washington County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent partnered with the Lincoln Trail District Health Department and the Washington County SNAP-Ed Program Assistant to plan and implement the Biggest Winner Wellness Series.  The series lasted from January 10 through March 28, 2019.  It featured weekly weigh-in's, sample recipes, and lessons.  Before each lesson, a walking video was played and participants were encouraged to be physically active.  The lesson series included education in healthy lifestyle changes, benefits of various vegetable groups, reducing added sugars, increasing physical activity, key nutrients of protein and fat, and consuming calcium to promote bone health.  Twenty-nine participants lost a total of 131 pounds.  Participants reported increased consumption of healthy foods and being more physically active.  This program will be continued on an annual basis to encourage healthy lifestyles and the prevention of chronic diseases.
