The Extension Homemakers are key volunteer leaders for the Cooperative Extension Service. To promote continued education and leadership development, the Homemakers are taught monthly lessons by Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agents. The Washington County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent taught the Kentucky Extension Leadership Development lesson "The Influence of Personal Characteristics: Personality, Culture and Environment" to Homemakers in the Lincoln Trail Area. This includes the following counties: Washington, Marion, Nelson, Hardin, Larue, Breckinridge, Meade, and Grayson. Twenty-eight Homemakers attended the classes and each of them brought the lesson to their club members. The leadership lesson focused on how people's behaviors are influenced by the environment and personal characteristics. This knowledge helps leaders to communicate and partner more effectively with one another. In program evaluations, 22 Homemakers indicated an improvement in the ability to comprehend the effect of their personality characteristics on their behavior, recognizing how their personal environmental conditions can influence their learning and development, and determining the role that different cultural beliefs and values play when considering leadership growth and development. The Washington County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent will continue to promote leadership development.
